All you have to do is keep an eye on stuff and stick it in the freezer if you don't know whether or not it'll get eaten. I don't think I'd have the bottle for what you did though.Janhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11430236104525571846noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-651314260700563624.post-45882882870775753682010-12-07T09:50:27.846+01:002010-12-07T09:50:27.846+01:00Jann, wasn't it you who recently posted about ...Jann, wasn't it you who recently posted about a Sicilian accidentally dropping a piece of bread and sending a prayer and a kiss to the blessed virgin? The trouble is, it's not the little local shops that are the problem, it's the supermarkets.

Mr.H, I think I would have loved to meet your grandma! The larger loaf weighs in at some 4 kg, worth at least €10 retail and the foccaccia is worth another 5 I reckon. And as I say it's just a fraction of what was actually there. And as the video explains quite neatly, it's not really the monetary value anyway that is the point. Being on my own and miserable weather outside today, I'm fattening myself up by having a sandwich every our or so all day! My neighbour has just donated a large pigbrain salami to me too, so I'm having a whale of a time!Heikohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17999245793961798308noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-651314260700563624.post-61316676558231284562010-12-06T15:28:13.710+01:002010-12-06T15:28:13.710+01:00What a great post Heiko. When I was a wee lad my grandmother used enlist the aid of my brother and I to help her dig through neighborhood dumpsters looking for aluminum cans to sell to the recycler...we would find all sorts of neat stuff besides the cans.:)

Everything you say about the supermarkets is so very, and sadly, true. Hopefully, you will get it. If not, go to Google search and do a search for "The Story of Stuff". It's a 21 minute video that tells how all this wastefulness got started.

I would like to know what you think of it.

Thanks,
Veggie PAKVeggie PAKhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13250455377130668508noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-651314260700563624.post-56644995920336596392010-12-06T13:36:36.149+01:002010-12-06T13:36:36.149+01:00First, let me apologize for such a long comment.
...First, let me apologize for such a long comment.

I enjoyed your post this morning, not because it was entertaining, but because it was accurate. We waste SO much of everything!

I have paid attention to dumpster diving results for many years. People would really be amazed at what is in them.

There is a reason we all waste so much: We are programmed to do so. Sound silly or doomsdayish? I would invite you to do a Google Search for "The Story of Stuff". I hope all your followers do the same. My sister told me about it a few years ago, and I have been trying to spread the word when possible. It's a 21 minute video about how all this waste began, at least in the United States. I suspect other countries followed suit. It was all created by design to make us in America a nation of consumers. It's where planned obsolescence came from! It's very interesting, but after you've watched it, you know that it's true. You can back it up in history books on what has been done economically for all countries to stimulate growth at any cost. I would like to know your opinion of it after you watch it.

It's hard to watch what goes on in the stores. I care about helping the less fortunate, so I share some of my crops with a local food kitchen when I am able to. A few years ago, I was in a supermarket (think about the basis of that name!) and I watched a worker in the deli section walk over to the cooler where the prepared wrapped sandwiches were for sale, and she began taking the sandwiches out from the cooler from where people could buy them, and was dropping them into a large trash can two feet away from the case! I asked what was wrong with them. She said they were too old to sell the next day. I tried to see if they would let me take some of them at least so I could deliver them to the kitchen, and the manager said "No. The store could be sued if someone got sick. They have to be disposed of in the trash compactor." Lawyers and Corporations be damned!

Again, sorry for the long comment, but please check out the story of stuff. You owe it to yourself.
Thanks!
Veggie PAKVeggie PAKhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13250455377130668508noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-651314260700563624.post-42234364723547634082010-12-06T12:23:19.286+01:002010-12-06T12:23:19.286+01:00Go on Laura, be a devil!
